HEALTHY, BUT ALSO TASTY
Be honest. Once you hit your 30's, there are some foods you just can't eat anymore. Check the ingredients label and you'll see that they all contain one of the common culprits: nuts, dairy, gluten, or alliums that irritate your digestive tract.
But have you ever shopped in the healthy choice section of your grocery store? You would think there is some sort of rule that healthy foods have to taste like cardboard! I remember being so upset and frustrated with the available options, I gave up trying.
Yet I missed tasty foods! Indian, Thai, Mexican - all of these foods contain irritants that make me fart for days! (yes, I said it). So, I started coming up with my own recipes inspired by the best meals from around the world. Without any allergens.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
A few years ago I got diagnosed with IBS. It was NOT fun. It was most certainly not sexy. And it hurt like hell. I learned that I was sensitive to gluten, alliums (garlic, onion, chives), fats, high levels of salt, and sugars: so, basically, EVERYTHING.
I still remember going to the store to find anything I can quickly cook and literally crying in the isle from being overwhelmed by my lack of choices. And whatever I could eat was just so TERRIBLE. The new normal became, "Well...if you put enough hot sauce on it, it almost tastes like the real thing."
THE REAL STORY BEHIND CHEEKY SPICES...
All jokes aside, It became really difficult to eat with my family - why should they suffer the same poor choices I was forced to endure? And I stopped going out with friends for a meal because I couldn't stomach yet another awkward conversation with the waiter about my list of allergens. So, I started mixing my own spice blends inspired by the world's tastiest dishes so we can all eat dinner together again and host awesome parties.
I've always worked full time, so I didn't have enough time for a massive production every weeknight. So I came up with a few go-to blends that taste great, are easy to make, and don't hurt my stomach.
That's how Cheeky Spices company was born. Made with quality ingredients, Cheeky Spices are produced in an allergen-free facility in Michigan, USA. These spice mixes are bursting with flavor, without using irritants that make your stomach sound louder than you are in a business meeting.
WHAT PEOPLE THINK
My friends and family love these mixes so much that they encouraged me to commercialize the idea. With continuous glowing reviews, I decided to take a first step towards running my own business.
I hosted a series of tastings and sent out samples to friends and family to try out, until we got the mixes right.
I started seriously considering the idea of commercialization in mid 2019 and made it a part of my New Year's resolution in 2020. Here is a visual timeline of my progress:
I need to network, build a community, pursue retail connections, visit trade shows, and launch new products to increase Cheeky's footprint. Here is a very basic visual representation of a plan to do just that:
HOW THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT
I would love to start the company by utilizing the economies of scale and getting the best pricing for bulk ingredients and production output. The initial 15K will be spent as detailed below.
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges I will do everything in my power to bring my vision of Cheeky Spices to life. However, there are a few things that may not go as planned and I wanted to make sure I address them. The supply chain is the most important part to iron out during rapid growth to scale, and I feel confident in my current partners. But should a link in this chain break while we are going through the growing pains, it may affect delivery times. I have grown other companies to scale and I anticipate these potential issues, but I have to accept that circumstances out of my control may affect the growth trajectory and delivery time. I have partnered up with a Michigan based co-packer who runs the certified allergen-free facility. The facility comes highly recommended and I've enjoyed working with the owners so far. But switching to a commercial process may slightly affect the formulation of the final product. I will do my best to get the formulas right and still deliver the products to you on time. I picked an interesting time to start a business. As folks are impacted by the restrictions of COVID-19 stay at home orders, they are cooking more at home, which created a higher demand for online products. This has benefited my online orders. However, some of the products used in production are imported from outside the US, which has slowed down production due to quarantine restrictions and lowered capacity of most US producers. As we are approaching the end of quarantine, I hope to experience very few of these types of delays and I will communicate with you as much as possible to make sure that you are always aware of the circumstances that may slow down or otherwise affect timely deliveries.
